10th Anniversary Symposium

From Copenhagen to Katowice – 10 years of climate policy and climate change

27 June 2019

On June 27th 2009, the climate exhibition centre “Klimahaus Bremerhaven 8° Ost” was opened. To this day, it remains a unique experience for more than 450,000 visitors every year who make a journey around the world along the eighth longitude and experience the earth’s climate zones, as well as test their skills in building a sustainable future.

The success of the Klimahaus is closely linked to the relevance of climate change, climate policy and related issues. In the opening year 2009 climate policy was all over the media due to the expectations put in COP 15 in Copenhagen, where a new framework for climate protection following the Kyoto protocol was expected to be agreed on. In the following years, climate change became more and more visible all over the world. The increasing urgency to mitigate climate change and skilful negotiations finally led to the Paris agreement in 2015. Only last year, most aspects of its implementation were agreed in Katowice.

We will revisit how the world went from the failure to agree in Copenhagen 2009 to the much appreciated agreement in Paris 2015 and its implementation in Katowice 2018.

In the second part of the symposium we will be looking at actually visible and tangible impacts of climate change all over the world, especially in the places the Klimahaus journey is about. In addition to a scientific view on new developments in climate change and climate research in the last ten years, climate change witnesses from around the world will talk about how their experiences at home.
