“The idea of the Klimahaus originated on an autumn day typical of northern Germany: storms and rain battered the Weser Dyke as Dr Carlo Petri and his team from Petri & Tiemann returned from a meeting with the municipal authorities of Bremerhaven at the end of November 2000. It was clear that they wanted a unique leisure and tourism product. It also had to be authentic. Due to its proximity to the AWI and the particular circumstances, Petri asked the crucial questions: Why don’t we focus on the weather and the climate? And what are the longitude and latitude of the site for this attraction? Petri, the originator of the idea, presented the outline of his ‘Klimahaus Bremerhaven’ concept to the key stakeholders in Bremen and Bremerhaven, the major backers of today’s public attraction, on 20 December 2000.”

Even though scientists were already discussing the topic of climate change at the time, there were still many questions surrounding the debate. Climate change was hardly considered in politics and daily life. But the fact that the idea for the Klimahaus in Bremerhaven had set a trend only became obvious after 2006. Extreme weather events such as heat waves made people suddenly pay attention. In 2007, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) described the imminent change more clearly than ever before. In June 2009, the Klimahaus in Bremerhaven opened its doors. None other than musician Bob Geldof attended the opening ceremony – a great honour for a unique project. In his speech, Geldof described the Klimahaus as a ‘love letter to our planet’ .
