An island in transition
A solitary island between the two worlds, between Siberia and the American continent, between tradition and the contemporary, is a place where many species gather and rest. The people here – the Yupik – have been living from seal hunting and whaling for thousands of years.
In the Bering Strait, on the edge of the Arctic, you will come face to face with a culture stretched between a society of hunters and foragers and the “American way of life”. The problems and hopes of the indigenous people, their normal daily life on an island cut off from the rest of the world, in a raw climate which is now changing – all this awaits you in this section with its fascinating scenery.
